Maine Bill Taking on NSA Spying Passes
Source: TenthAmendmentCenter.com
--Under the proposed measure, the cops would not be able to obtain warrantless data from the feds. Brakey said it was particularly important to pass LD531 in order to keep state and local law enforcement from doing an end-around, bypassing a state law requiring a warrant for the collection of electronic data.

Maine Attorney General Janet Mills and some law enforcement lobbyists claim the bill could hinder police from catching child pornographers and other dangerous criminals. Their assertions mirror fear-mongering by law enforcement interests in other states.

100 Items that Disappear Fast
Source: LewRockwell.com
--Do you ever wonder if a major emergency situation occurred what would disappear first?  Due to the overwhelming nature of prepping for a emergency situation, many do not know where to even begin, let alone think of emergency situations they would need to prepare for.  Having a ready supply of food, water and batteries are a good start, but not enough.

COMMENT: It's good to have the basics (defense, water, food, etc.), but it never hurts to look over long lists like this for other ideas.

The Atomic Bomb Wasn't Necessary To End WW2
Source: Collective-Evolution.com
--We are often taught that yes, use of the atomic bomb was necessary to end the war with Japan at the earliest possible moment, but judging by the statements of many high ranking political and military personnel this is simply not the case.

Here's what General/President Dwight Eisenhower had to say about it in his 1963 memoir, The White House Years: Mandate for Change, 1953-1956 (pp. 312-313):

"Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and secondly, our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was, I thought, no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives. It was my belief that Japan was, at that very moment, seeking some way to surrender with a minimum loss of "face."

--Similarly, Admiral Leahy, Chief of Staff to presidents Roosevelt and Truman, later commented:

"It is my opinion that the use of the barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan… The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender because of the effective sea blockade and the successful bombing with conventional weapons… My own feeling was that in being the first to use it, we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children."

COMMENT: Carroll Quigley also touches on this topic in his book Tragedy and Hope:

"[The atomic bomb's] contribution to victory was secondary, since it had nothing to do with the victory over Germany and, at most, shortened the war with the Japanese only by weeks." --Tragedy and Hope, page 848

"…Director of Military Intelligence for the Pacific Theater of War Alfred McCormack, who was probably in as good position as anyone for judging the situation, felt that the Japanese surrender could have been obtained in a few weeks by blockade alone: 'The Japanese had no longer enough food in stock, and their fuel reserves were practically exhausted. We had begun a secret process of mining all their harbors, which was steadily isolating them from the rest of the world. If we had brought this project to its logical conclusion, the destruction of Japan's cities with incendiary and other bombs would have been quite unnecessary." --Tragedy and Hope, page 862

NSA mass phone surveillance revealed by Edward Snowden ruled illegal
Source: theGuardian.com
The US court of appeals has ruled that the bulk collection of telephone metadata is unlawful, in a landmark decision that clears the way for a full legal challenge against the National Security Agency.

A panel of three federal judges for the second circuit overturned an earlier ruling that the controversial surveillance practice first revealed to the US public by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in 2013 could not be subject to judicial review.

Moving on...for now
Source: JoePlummer.com
It's been almost exactly one year since I published Tragedy and Hope 101 and I'm happy to say, for the first time in more than a decade, I'm not actively working on another book. This is a really good thing; let me explain why.

When I sold my business at the end of 2003, my goal was to research and write about three main topics: our corrupt monetary system, our corrupt political system, and the corrupt elite who control them both. I believe that Dishonest Money, Tragedy and Hope 101, and Leaving the Illusion (respectively), provide a clear summary of these topics. In short, I'm moving on because I've done what I set out to do.

Market is Solving Climate Change
Source: DailyBell.com
--Whether or not one believes the world is in peril, fossil fuels are certainly not pleasant. No one enjoys breathing exhaust fumes or having frackers move in across the street. We accept the disadvantages because the fossil fuel cost-benefit calculation outweighs the alternatives.

This is beginning to change, and the way it is changing is a classic illustration of markets beating government to the best answer.

--When an industry can undercut the competition's price by 30% or more, the competition does not have a chance. The established players will survive only as long as they can use political influence to protect their turf. Electric utilities in Hawaii and Arizona, among other places, are desperately throwing up hurdles for homeowners with rooftop solar cells.

These utilities will lose. Technology is rendering their state-protected monopolies worthless. They can either evolve or die.

The Neoconservatives: Tyranny's Fifth Column
Source: TheDailyBell.com
--Today in America, the neoconservative political movement represents a "Fifth Column" for the forces of collectivism. Its intellectuals and activists promote themselves as conservatives who oppose the liberals, but their political philosophy has nothing to do with what is known as American conservatism, which has always stood for a limited constitutional government and free enterprise. These values are anathema to today's "neoconservatives" in the nation's political, literary and scholarly circles.

--The paradigm that neoconservatives have given their lives to is built upon a centralized mega-state running American society from Washington and also, as much as possible, the rest of the world.

--The neoconservatives, thus, represent tyranny's Fifth Column in America. They are deceiving the people into believing that they are genuine conservatives, but like the socialists who were their mentors, they call themselves what they know the people want to hear. These ersatz conservatives have now grown to dominate Washington's think tanks, Wall Street's brokerages and banks, and many major publications and universities. They are highly influential writers, scholars, pundits, publishers, institute heads, bankers and corporate moguls.
