Flint's water crisis isn't a failure of austerity. It's a failure of government.

--Residents started complaining about the taste and color of the water right after the switch in April 2014. The city denied anything was wrong, but later discovered that the water contained a higher-than-recommended concentration of TTHM (trihalomethanes) — a byproduct that is generated when too much chlorine is required to disinfect the water. This, along with some other issues, prompted General Motors to quit the Flint water system after its auto parts started corroding. Yet Democratic Flint Mayor Dayne Walling was still telling residents the water was safe, even advising them that buying bottled water would be "wasting their precious money."
After the initial botch up, one would think the authorities would have woken up, especially since these early problems were a harbinger of lead poisoning, among the worst possible things that can happen to a water system. That's not because the Flint River itself contains lead. It's because when acidic, chlorinated water flows through pipes, it destroys their coating, allowing lead to leach in. This is a totally avoidable problem whose cure was not necessarily to return to more expensive Detroit water. Rather, it was to simply add phosphorous to the water, something that could be done for as little as $50,000 annually, well within the means even of a cash-strapped city, sources knowledgeable about the problem maintain.

Court rules Michigan has no responsibility to provide quality public education

In a blow to schoolchildren statewide, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled on Nov. 7 the State of Michigan has no legal obligation to provide a quality public education to students in the struggling Highland Park School District.
A 2-1 decision reversed an earlier circuit court ruling that there is a "broad compelling state interest in the provision of an education to all children." The appellate court said the state has no constitutional requirement to ensure schoolchildren actually learn fundamental skills such as reading — but rather is obligated only to establish and finance a public education system, regardless of quality.

Many people see the CDC as a final arbiter of truth; a "gold standard" of scientific integrity. The idea that a tiny group of individuals within the CDC could (and would) manipulate "the truth" seems ridiculous to the average citizen, and that's why this story is so important. It goes beyond the issue of vaccines. It highlights how easily "the gospel," intended for mass consumption and reiteration, can be fabricated. It highlights the danger of believing that others can be trusted to do your reasoning for you.

Sugar Identified as a Top Cause of the Surge in Cancer

According to the Credit Suisse Research Institute's 2013 study1 "Sugar: Consumption at a Crossroads," as much as 40 percent of US healthcare expenditures are for diseases directly related to the overconsumption of sugar.
Incredibly, we spend more than $1 trillion each year fighting the damaging health effects of sugar, which runs the gamut from obesity and diabetes, to heart disease and cancer.
The fact that sugar and obesity are linked to an increased risk of cancer is now becoming well-recognized. According to a report2 on the global cancer burden, published in 2014, obesity is responsible for an estimated 500,000 cancer cases worldwide each year.
Nearly two-thirds of obesity-related cancers — which include colon, rectum, ovary, and womb cancers — occur in North America and Europe.3 A more recent British report estimates obesity may result in an additional 670,000 cancer cases in the UK alone over the next 20 years.

Hillary Emails Reveal True Motive for Libya Intervention

--The email identifies French President Nicholas Sarkozy as leading the attack on Libya with five specific purposes in mind: to obtain Libyan oil, ensure French influence in the region, increase Sarkozy's reputation domestically, assert French military power, and to prevent Gaddafi's influence in what is considered "Francophone Africa."
Most astounding is the lengthy section delineating the huge threat that Gaddafi's gold and silver reserves, estimated at "143 tons of gold, and a similar amount in silver," posed to the French franc (CFA) circulating as a prime African currency. In place of the noble sounding "Responsibility to Protect" (R2P) doctrine fed to the public, there is this "confidential" explanation of what was really driving the war:
"This gold was accumulated prior to the current rebellion and was intended to be used to establish a pan-African currency based on the Libyan golden Dinar. This plan was designed to provide the Francophone African Countries with an alternative to the French franc (CFA).
(Source Comment: According to knowledgeable individuals this quantity of gold and silver is valued at more than $7 billion. French intelligence officers discovered this plan shortly after the current rebellion began, and this was one of the factors that influenced President Nicolas Sarkozy's decision to commit France to the attack on Libya.)"

• deliberations, decisions, or actions on monetary policy matters, including discount window operations, reserves of member banks, securities credit, interest on deposits, and open market operations;
• transactions made under the direction of the Federal Open Market Committee; or
• a part of a discussion or communication among or between members of the Board and officers and employees of the Federal Reserve System related to clauses (1)–(3) of this subsection.

I've never been terribly excited about the idea of "auditing the FED." (I much prefer the idea of abolishing the central bank, just like our much-wiser predecessors managed to do with their central banks in 1785, 1811 and 1836.)
I suppose my biggest fear is that an audit will backfire; that it will be used to legitimize this completely illegitimate institution. I can see the headlines now "Audit turns up nothing illegal, FED critics silenced!" That or, at best, the audit will lead to calls for "more oversight" which will accomplish exactly nothing. The FED was created to subvert our system of government. It's very existence is a crime. ...As long as that fact doesn't get lost in the "audit," then I'm slightly more optimistic.

The US Has Been Giving Afghan Children Violent Books to Indoctrinate them to Jihad – It Worked

--From the Cold War period until very recently, the U.S. government spent millions of dollars supplying Afghan schoolchildren with propagandized textbooks that had violent images and militant jihadi teachings. The motive behind this propaganda was to actually radicalize the Afghan children so they would be more willing to fight against the Soviets when they got older.
According to the Washington Post, the textbooks were published in the dominant Afghan languages of Dari and Pashtu and developed in the early 1980's at a cost of $51 million.
The schoolbooks were even approved by the Taliban because the teachings were not far off from their own worldview.
This propaganda effort was only made public after the U.S. government went to war in Afghanistan in 2002 and it was revealed through the media that the western curriculum being taught in Afghan schools was actually promoting jihad. Read full article »

To better clarify this right and duty, a jury ought to be given a choice of THREE verdicts that it can return in court: Guilty, not guilty, or NOT PUNISHABLE.
This third verdict would render useless the government's practice of passing laws that nobody asked for and few support. It would erase all ambiguity regarding the right of the people to control the executive, legislative and judicial power of their government.

Putin Accuses US Of ISIS Oil Coverup

"Our colleagues from the State Department and the Pentagon have confirmed that the photo-proof, which we presented at a briefing [on December 2], of the origin and destination of the stolen oil, coming from the areas controlled by the terrorists, is authentic. However, the US claim that they 'don't see the border crossings with tanker trucks crossing the border,' raises a smile, if only, because the photos are still images," Major General Igor Konashenkov, a Defense Ministry spokesman said. "We advise the American side to have a look at how the tanker trucks not only drive through checkpoints at the Turkish border, but pass through them without even stopping."
As RT notes, an unnamed US State Department official confirmed to Reuters on Friday that the Russian photos of thousands of oil tanker trucks in Syria were authentic [but] stressed that he hasn't seen "the imagery of the border crossing with trucks crossing the border, and that's because [the US doesn't] believe it exists."

When you see that there have been "355 mass shootings" this year, do you imagine 355 Columbine-type events? Do you imagine 355 events like the recent shootings in California? Is there an actual definition for this term? According to Jim Babka at Downsize DC, "mass shooting" usually means:
"...at least four people are struck, even grazed, by gunfire. That definition includes domestic and gang violence."
"Merely saying there have been 355 mass shootings tells us nothing about the number of shots, shooters, or degree of injury. But the figures are available. In 42% of the incidents, there were zero deaths. One person died in roughly 29% of the incidents, while another 29% involved two or more deaths."
"Now, if you revise the definition to five or more deaths due to gunfire, the number of mass shootings declines to 15. That statistic wouldn't make it to a segment on CNN or The Daily Show."

Flu Shot Remains Most Dangerous Vaccine Based on Injuries and Deaths Compensated by Government

The Department of Justice issues a report on vaccine injuries and deaths every quarter to the Advisory Commission on Childhood Vaccines (Click on "Meeting Book – PDF – 10.8 MB" for September 3rdmeeting). There are 211 cases for vaccine injuries and deaths for the period 5/16/2015 through 8/15/2015.
86 of the settlements were listed in this report, giving the name of the vaccines, the injury, and the amount of time the case was pending before settlement. Three of those settlements were for deaths linked to vaccines, with two deaths related to the flu shot, and one death for the HPV shot. 65 of the 86 settlements were for injuries and deaths due to the flu shot, and the majority of flu shot injuries were for Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).

Drone Pilots Expose Murder, Feds Freeze their Credit Cards and Bank Accounts

Elsewhere the former drone operators have described how their colleagues dismissed children as "fun-sized terrorists" and compared killing them to "cutting the grass before it grows too long." Children who live in countries targeted by the drone program are in a state of constant terror, according to Westmoreland: "There are 15-year-olds growing up who have not lived a day without drones overhead, but you also have expats who are watching what's going on in their home countries and seeing regularly the violations that are happening there, and that is something that could radicalize them."
By reliable estimates, ninety percent of those killed in drone strikes are entirely harmless people, making the program a singularly effective method of producing anti-American terrorism. Cops Now Take More Than Robbers

--An economic consulting firm reported on data last week showing that the approximately $4.5 billion in annual forfeitures now exceeds the $3.9 billion Americans lose in robberies each year. The clear point: Your local police or sheriff's department is more likely to take your stuff than a robber. The Institute for Justice report found the problem getting worse. "It's exploding, despite the fact that the issue is getting a lot of attention," said Dick Carpenter, one of the study's authors. According to the report, forfeiture revenues have more than doubled between 2002 to 2013. California agencies collected approximately $280 million over the 11-year study period—and an additional $696 million by partnering with federal agencies.
These are big dollars to local police departments, which explains the arm-twisting and lobbying as that reform bill made it to the Assembly floor. Critics of asset forfeiture agree that agencies will lose money, but argue that the government is supposed to promote justice. Their agencies should be funded through general tax proceeds, not by grabbing the homes and cars of people who may not have done anything wrong. Read full article »

"Civil forfeiture far outpaces criminal forfeiture.
Criminal forfeiture requires a criminal conviction to deprive people of their property. By contrast, civil forfeiture allows law enforcement to take property from innocent people never convicted of or even charged with a crime, making it easier for the government to forfeit property and harder for property owners to fight back.
*Just 13 percent of Department of Justice forfeitures from 1997 to 2013 were criminal forfeitures; 87 percent were civil forfeitures.
*Among DOJ civil forfeitures, 88 percent took place "administratively." Administrative forfeitures happen automatically when a property owner fails to challenge a seizure in court for any reason, including the inability to afford a lawyer or a missed deadline to file a claim. The seized property is simply presumed "guilty" without a neutral arbiter such as a judge determining whether it should be permanently taken from its owner."

--On Monday the trial in London of a Swedish man, Bherlin Gildo, accused of terrorism in Syria, collapsed after it became clear British intelligence had been arming the same rebel groups the defendant was charged with supporting.
The prosecution abandoned the case, apparently to avoid embarrassing the intelligence services. The defence argued that going ahead with the trial would have been an "affront to justice" when there was plenty of evidence the British state was itself providing "extensive support" to the armed Syrian opposition. Would the proposed Constitution create the limited federal government promised?
That was the central question facing the ratifying conventions as America considered adopting the new Constitution. Those in favor of ratification swore it would. But many remained skeptical, arguing that the new general government would undoubtedly try to expand its power and that the Constitution would not sufficiently restrain it.
It only took a decade for the federal government to prove the anti-federalists right.
During the summer of 1798, Congress passed, and President John Adams signed into law, four acts together known as the Alien and Sedition Acts. With winds of war blowing across the Atlantic, the Federalist Party majority wrote the laws to prevent "seditious" acts from weakening the U.S. government. Federalists utilized fear of the French to stir up support for these draconian laws, expanding federal power, concentrating authority in the executive branch and severely restricting freedom of speech.
--Recognizing the grave danger these act posed to the basic constitutional structure, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison drafted resolutions that were passed by the Kentucky and Virginia legislatures on Nov. 10 and Dec. 21, 1798, respectively. The CIA was created by the CFR (with a great deal of help from none other than Allen Dulles).
What was the stated purpose of the CFR? Answer: To help its progenitors gain control via "secret political and economic influence" and secret control of "journalistic, educational, and propaganda agencies." So, is it any surprise that the CIA (an instrument of the CFR), was created to assist in that goal?

Other organizations which cooperated with the CIA include [ABC], [NBC], the Associated Press, United Press International, Reuters, Hearst Newspapers, Scripps Howard, Newsweek magazine, the Mutual Broadcasting System, the Miami Herald and the old Saturday Evening Post and New York Herald Tribune.
By far the most valuable of these associations, according to CIA officials, have been with the New York Times, CBS and Time Inc.
The CIA's use of the American news media has been much more extensive than Agency officials have acknowledged publicly or in closed sessions with members of Congress. The general outlines of what happened are indisputable; the specifics are harder to come by.
--During the 1976 investigation of the CIA by the Senate Intelligence Committee, chaired by Senator Frank Church, the dimensions of the Agency's involvement with the press became apparent to several members of the panel, as well as to two or three investigators on the staff. But top officials of the CIA, including former directors William Colby and George Bush, persuaded the committee to restrict its inquiry into the matter and to deliberately misrepresent the actual scope of the activities in its final report.
--The CIA also refused the staffs requests for more information on the use of academics. Bush began to urge members of the committee to curtail its inquiries in both areas and conceal its findings in the final report.
"He kept saying, 'Don't fuck these guys in the press and on the campuses,' pleading that they were the only areas of public life with any credibility left," reported a Senate source. Colby, Elder and Rogovin also implored individual members of the committee to keep secret what the staff had found. "There were a lot of representations that if this stuff got out some of the biggest names in journalism would get smeared," said another source. COMMENT: Many people see the CDC as a final arbiter of truth; a "gold standard" of scientific integrity. The idea that a tiny group of individuals within the CDC could (and would) manipulate "the truth" seems ridiculous to the average citizen, and that's why this story is so important. It goes beyond the issue of vaccines. It highlights how easily "the gospel," intended for mass consumption and reiteration, can be fabricated. It highlights the danger of believing that others can be trusted to do your reasoning for you.
