--There was one case where the mass surveillance of everyone's phone records in the United States of America showed that there was a single cab driver in California wiring money back to his clan in Somalia that did have some ties to terrorism, but even in that case, the government said they could have achieved—and they would have achieved—the same evidentiary gain through traditional targeted means of investigation. They said they were already closing in on this individual.
And so, this raises the question: Why are programs being billed as public safety programs when they have no corresponding public safety benefit? And the unfortunate reality is that while these programs do have value—you know, the government is not doing this for absolutely no reason—the value that they have is based on intelligence collection. It's based on adversarial competition between states that's happening secretly. It's happening without any form of robust oversight. It's happening without the involvement of real open courts with an adversarial process.
And increasingly, we're seeing that even if these programs are instituted with the best of intentions—to keep citizens safe, to assist in war zone operations, in the intervention of terrorism in certain spaces around the United States and throughout the world—inevitably they come back to impact us here at home. The same programs that the National Security Agency and Central Intelligence Agency collaborated on in areas like Yemen are now being used by the United States Marshals Service in the United States against common criminals, people who do not represent any real threat to public safety in a manner that would justify in any way the intrusion into and the violation of millions and millions of citizens' rights—and noncitizens.

VIGILANTE HACKER INFECTS ROUTERS WITH MALWARE TO FIGHT BAD MALWARE

A newly discovered malware, called Linux.Wifatch by security firm Symantec, has been found to compromise at least 10,000 Linux-routers. Unlike other malware, however, Wifatch protects the router from other infections, protecting victims instead.
Security giant Symantec has discovered a new vigilante malware that behaves like most other malware by infecting a vulnerable device, remaining undetected while operating and actively updating itself over a peer-to-peer (P2P) network.

Propaganda War Begins: Russia Hits US-Backed "Moderate" Rebel Targets

--The bottom line going forward is that the US and its regional and European allies are going to have to decide whether they want to be on the right side of history here or not, and as we've been careful to explain, no one is arguing that Bashar al-Assad is the most benevolent leader in the history of statecraft but it has now gotten to the point where Western media outlets are describing al-Qaeda as "moderate" in a last ditch effort to explain away Washington's unwillingness to join Russia in stabilizing Syria. This is a foreign policy mistake of epic proportions on the part of the US and the sooner the West concedes that and moves to correct it by admitting that none of the groups the CIA, the Pentagon, and Washington's Mid-East allies have trained and supported represent a viable alternative to the Assad regime, the sooner Syria will cease to be the chessboard du jour for a global proxy war that's left hundreds of thousands of innocent people dead.

COMMENT: You mean those goat herders who were sold to the US government by Afghan drug lords for $5,000 a piece? All those "terrorist suspects" that were rounded up but never convicted of any crime whatsoever? The ones that were held (some still held), abused, tortured, raped, even killed without any recourse; no opportunity to challenge their accusers, no opportunity to challenge the "evidence" against them?
Following McLaughlin's logic, it would be immoral NOT to rape a "suspects" child and then light it on fire if the government believed that the rape and subsequent immolation might yield useful information.
Meanwhile, this same morally-bankrupt mindset has led our "policy makers" to FUND the very terrorists that they claim to be "protecting us" from. It's all a sick joke, and yet the common man is so easily terrified, he'll happily accept any crime or criminal that offers the dishonest promise of "safety."
