Putin accuses US of backing terrorism in Middle East

The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has launched a stinging attack on US policy in the Middle East, accusing Washington of backing terrorism and playing a "double game".
In a speech on Thursday at the annual gathering of the Valdai Club, a group of Russian and international analysts and politicians, Putin said the US had attempted to use terrorist groups as "a battering ram to overthrow regimes they don't like".
He said: "It's always hard to play a double game – to declare a fight against terrorists but at the same time try to use some of them to move the pieces on the Middle Eastern chessboard in your own favour. There's no need to play with words and split terrorists into moderate and not moderate. I would like to know what the difference is."

Monsanto's Roundup may damage liver, kidneys – study

Long-term intake of the Monsanto's most popular Roundup herbicide, even in very small amounts lower than permissible in US water, may lead to kidney and liver damage, a new study claims.
The research, conducted by an international group of scientists from the UK, Italy and France, studied the effects of prolonged exposure to small amounts of the Roundup herbicide and one of its main components – glyphosate.
In their study, published in Environmental Health on August 25, the scientists particularly focused on the influence of Monsanto's Roundup on gene expression in the kidneys and liver.
In the new two-year study, which extended the findings from one conducted in 2012, the team added tiny amounts of Roundup to water that was given to rats in doses much smaller than allowed in US drinking water.
--Research conducted in 2014 and published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health linked the use of Monsanto's Roundup to widespread chronic kidney disease that took the form of an epidemic in Sri Lanka. Another study showed that Monsanto agrochemicals may have caused cellular and genetic diseases in Brazilian soybean workers.
Additionally, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer has recently determined that Roundup's glyphosate is 'number one' among carcinogens, "possibly" causing cancer.

CIA torture survivors sue psychologists who designed infamous program (with Video)

"This case is about ensuring that the people behind the torture program are held accountable so history doesn't repeat itself," Steven Watt, one of the ACLU attorneys representing the three ex-detainees, told the Guardian.
"Impunity for torture sends the dangerous message to US and foreign officials that there will be no consequences for future abuses.
"This lawsuit is different from past ones because public government documents now provide exhaustive details on the CIA torture program, and they identify the people who were tortured and how it happened. The government has long abused the 'state secrets' privilege to prevent accountability for torture but at this stage, any claim that the torture of our clients is a state secret would be absurd."

COMMENT: It's always good to actually "see" some of the INNOCENT people who were rounded up by drug lords, sold to the US government, and then tortured as "suspected terrorists."

What is it about whistleblowers that the powers that be can't stand?
When I blew the whistle on the CIA's illegal torture program, I was derided in many quarters as a traitor. My detractors in the government attacked me for violating my secrecy agreement, even as they ignored the oath we'd all taken to protect and defend the Constitution.
All of this happened despite the fact that the torture I helped expose is illegal in the United States. Torture also violates a number of international laws and treaties to which our country is signatory — some of which the United States itself was the driving force in drafting.
I was charged with three counts of espionage, all of which were eventually dropped when I took a plea to a lesser count. I had to choose between spending up to 30 months in prison and rolling the dice to risk a 45-year sentence. With five kids, and three of them under the age of 10, I took the plea.

The REAL Hastert Scandal: Pedophilia, Drug Money and Blackmail (Video)

In May of this year a federal grand jury indicted former Speaker of the House John Dennis Hastert. The charges: that he had "structured" withdrawals of over $950,000 from various bank accounts to skirt bank reporting laws and that he had lied to federal agents about these withdrawals. According to the indictment the withdrawals were part of a bid to pay $3.5 million in blackmail to cover up "past misconduct" from his time as a high school teacher in Illinois.
The story seemed perfect fodder for the tabloid corporate press. It featured a former high-ranking politician, blackmail and intrigue, and just enough details about Hastert's former life as a teacher and wrestling coach to suggest that the "past misconduct" referred to a salacious scandal of sexual abuse of a minor. But for some reason the story faded from the headlines almost as quickly as it appeared. And now that Hastert's legal team has announced that they are seeking a plea deal with prosecutors in order to avoid a trial, it seems the story is likely to disappear completely.
But a series of revelations from FBI whistleblowers reveal that this story is just the tip of a very seedy iceberg, one that implicates Hastert, his top aide, other Congress members and government officials in a criminal network involved in sexual intrigue, foreign espionage, blackmail, and drug money.

Washington Airdrops Tons of Weapons to Rebels in Syria
--In the first bit of bad news, we saw the policy shift away from vetting and training rebels. The Administration announced that because the $500 million plan to train and equip vetted "moderate" rebels has been an obvious failure, the solution was to remove the training and vetting part of the project and simply send military equipment. From now on only leaders of the rebel groups would be vetted. The fighters would simply be armed, no questions asked.
What kinds of groups would be newly armed by the US? Groups with "diverse membership," which likely means al-Qaeda affiliate the al-Nusra front, Ahrar al Shams, and other jihadists.
