Would Turkey Be Justified in Kidnapping or Drone-Killing the Turkish Cleric in Pennsylvania?
Source: TheIntercept
--Tayyip Erdogan places the blame for this weekend's failed coup attempt on an Islamic preacher and one-time ally, Fethullah Gulen (above), who now resides in Pennsylvania with a green card. Erdogan is demanding the U.S. extradite Gulen, citing prior extraditions by the Turkish government of terror suspects demanded by the U.S.: "Now we're saying deliver this guy who's on our terrorist list to us." Erdogan has been requesting Gulen's extradition from the U.S. for at least two years, on the ground that he has been subverting the Turkish government while harbored by the U.S. Thus far, the U.S. is refusing, with Secretary of State John Kerry demanding of Turkey: "Give us the evidence, show us the evidence. We need a solid legal foundation that meets the standard of extradition."

In light of the presence on U.S. soil of someone the Turkish government regards as a "terrorist" and a direct threat to its national security, would Turkey be justified in dispatching a weaponized drone over Pennsylvania to find and kill Gulen if the U.S. continues to refuse to turn him over, or sending covert operatives to kidnap him? That was the question posed yesterday by Col. Morris Davis, former chief prosecutor of Guantánamo's military commissions who resigned in protest over the use of torture-obtained evidence:

COMMENT: This is an excellent / short article by Glenn Greenwald.

By the way, Fethullah Gulen is the man who controls a multi-billion dollar charter school operation. He's the "terrorist" that Sibel Edmonds mentions in the video below.

Snowden Designs a Device to Warn if Your iPhone's Radios Are Snitching
Source: Wired
--You might think you can achieve the same effect by simply turning your iPhone off with its power button, or placing it in a Faraday bag designed to block all radio signals. But Faraday bags can still leak radio information, Huang says, and clever malware can make an iPhone appear to be switched off when it's not, as Snowden warned in an NBC interview in 2014. Regardless, Huang says their intention was to allow reporters to reliably disable a phone's radio signals while still using the device's other functions, like taking notes and photographs or recording audio and video.

Digital Afterlife
Source: TheAtlantic.com
--Let's presume that at some future time we have all the technological pieces in place. When you're close to death we scan your details and fire up your simulation. Something wakes up with the same memories and personality as you. It finds itself in a familiar world. The rendering is not perfect, but it's pretty good. Odors probably don't work quite the same. The fine-grained details are missing. You live in a simulated New York City with crowds of fellow dead people but no rats or dirt. Or maybe you live in a rural setting where the grass feels like Astroturf. Or you live on the beach in the sun, and every year an upgrade makes the ocean spray seem a little less fake. There's no disease. No aging. No injury. No death unless the operating system crashes. You can interact with the world of the living the same way you do now, on a smart phone or by email. You stay in touch with living friends and family, follow the latest elections, watch the summer blockbusters. Maybe you still have
a job in the real world as a lecturer or a board director or a comedy writer. It's like you've gone to another universe but still have contact with the old one.

But is it you? Did you cheat death, or merely replace yourself with a creepy copy?

Dear France: The Government Will Not Protect You From Tractor Trailers (Video)
Source: Corbett Report
As the Problem-Reaction-Solution (Nice edition) plays out as expected, it is time to remind ourselves: The government is not your daddy and it will not protect you from the boogeyman. The government creates the boogeyman to scare you. Giving more power to the government in the wake of every tragedy only incentivizes them to terrorize you further.

The CIA's 'Pokémon Go' App is Doing What the Patriot Act Can't
Source: Corbett Report
--Firstly, the app requires an excessive amount of permissions on a user's device, including the ability to read your contacts, find accounts on your device, and access your camera. The app even requires full access to a user's Google account, which it can then use to read your emails, send emails from your account, browse your Google Drive documents and photos, etc. But apparently that's just "a mistake" and will be "corrected soon."

Secondly, the game's privacy policy contains such gems as: "We may disclose any information about you (or your authorized child) that is in our possession or control to government or law enforcement officials or private parties." What could go wrong?

But wait, it gets worse!

pokemonciaThe maker of the app? Niantic Labs. Never heard of them? That's because until last year they were an internal start-up of none other than Google, the NSA-linked Big Brother company. Even now Google remains one of Niantic's major backers. Niantic was founded by John Hanke, who also founded Keyhole, Inc., the mapping company which was created with seed money from In-Q-Tel, the CIA's venture capital arm, and which was eventually rolled into Google Maps.

So yes, the Pokémon game currently taking the internet by storm (and scooping up all their data, including activities, movements and communications) was created by a CIA-linked businessman who gestated his company at Google.

Feeling safe yet?

As it turns out, the big, bad Big Brother Spies of the NSA and the DHS and the CIA don't really need their Patriot Act powers, after all. All the powers-that-shouldn't-be need to do is create a fun, shiny trinket for the people to play with and they will literally pay for their own surveillance.
