My Bachelor's Degree Means Nothing
Source: Steve-Patterson.com
--At the time, I thought I was entering a new realm, filled with academic elite. I expected intellectual camaraderie with students and rigorous debates with professors. Ideas would be passionately challenged and defended. It was a romantic vision. And it was horribly wrong.

Instead, I found a realm of lazy students and disinterested professors. My peers were far more interested in partying than ideas, and their vision of academic success was to allot maximum time to socializing while still passing class. They accomplished this by mastering the fine art of academic regurgitation.

What is academic regurgitation, you ask? Simple: write what the professor wants to hear and how he wants to hear it. You don't have to ideologically agree with the professor; rather, there's a standard format for communicating that you've done the homework and read the assignments. It doesn't matter if you understand the material, nor does it take much intellectual effort. Of course, communicating you've done the homework is quite different from actually doing the homework.

China Bans Internet News Reporting as Media Crackdown Widens
Source: Bloomberg.com
--The agency instructed the operators of mobile and online news services to dismantle "current-affairs news" operations on Friday, after earlier calling a halt to such activity at Tencent, according to people familiar with the situation. Like its peers, Asia's largest internet company had developed a news operation and grown its team. Henceforth, they and other services can only carry reports provided by government-controlled print or online media, the people said, asking not to be identified because the issue is politically sensitive.

Another IRS Bait and Switch
Source: Nestmann.com
--The IRS encouraged taxpayers to participate in the program by emphasizing the much heavier penalties for non-compliance. Yet, the IRS also claimed that under no circumstances would a taxpayer entering the OVDP be required to pay a penalty greater than would be required under existing statutes.

These claims turned out to be big fat fibs.

In the report, the TAS described how taxpayers with only minor reporting violations and who owed no delinquent tax were herded into the 2009 OVDP. But once enrolled, the penalties were much heavier than they would have otherwise been subjected to..

Would Turkey Be Justified in Kidnapping or Drone-Killing the Turkish Cleric in Pennsylvania?
Source: TheIntercept
--Tayyip Erdogan places the blame for this weekend's failed coup attempt on an Islamic preacher and one-time ally, Fethullah Gulen (above), who now resides in Pennsylvania with a green card. Erdogan is demanding the U.S. extradite Gulen, citing prior extraditions by the Turkish government of terror suspects demanded by the U.S.: "Now we're saying deliver this guy who's on our terrorist list to us." Erdogan has been requesting Gulen's extradition from the U.S. for at least two years, on the ground that he has been subverting the Turkish government while harbored by the U.S. Thus far, the U.S. is refusing, with Secretary of State John Kerry demanding of Turkey: "Give us the evidence, show us the evidence. We need a solid legal foundation that meets the standard of extradition."

In light of the presence on U.S. soil of someone the Turkish government regards as a "terrorist" and a direct threat to its national security, would Turkey be justified in dispatching a weaponized drone over Pennsylvania to find and kill Gulen if the U.S. continues to refuse to turn him over, or sending covert operatives to kidnap him? That was the question posed yesterday by Col. Morris Davis, former chief prosecutor of Guantánamo's military commissions who resigned in protest over the use of torture-obtained evidence:

COMMENT: This is an excellent / short article by Glenn Greenwald.

By the way, Fethullah Gulen is the man who controls a multi-billion dollar charter school operation. He's the "terrorist" that Sibel Edmonds mentions in the video below.

Snowden Designs a Device to Warn if Your iPhone's Radios Are Snitching
Source: Wired
--You might think you can achieve the same effect by simply turning your iPhone off with its power button, or placing it in a Faraday bag designed to block all radio signals. But Faraday bags can still leak radio information, Huang says, and clever malware can make an iPhone appear to be switched off when it's not, as Snowden warned in an NBC interview in 2014. Regardless, Huang says their intention was to allow reporters to reliably disable a phone's radio signals while still using the device's other functions, like taking notes and photographs or recording audio and video.
