Biologist explains how marijuana drives tumor cells to 'suicide' (w/ Video)

A December 2013 video that has been picking up attention in medical marijuana advocacy circles points out the benefits of the drug's active ingredient in cancer treatments.
"We observed that the cannabinoids were very effective in reducing tumor growth," molecular biologist Christina Sanchez said in the video, first uploaded by Cannabis Planet. "Cells can die in different ways, and after cannabinoid treatment, they were dying in the 'clean' way. They were committing suicide, which is something you really want."

New FDA Food Label Rules Ignore the GMO Elephant in the Room

--Under the proposed new rules, food manufacturers will be required to list more realistic (as in larger) serving sizes, and display the calorie count in large, bold type. The new labels will also provide a more detailed breakdown of the types of sugar contained in products. And instead of listing vitamins A and C, new labels will list vitamin D and potassium, because, the FDA said, it has evidence that "people are not consuming enough of these nutrients to protect against chronic diseases."
Nothing wrong with these changes. But when is the last time you read a petition demanding the FDA list vitamin D on labels? Or a news article about tens, or hundreds of thousands of consumers clamoring for a more accurate breakdown of the sugar content in their foods?
What consumers really want to know is whether or not their food has been genetically engineered. And anyone who's paying attention knows that this issue-labeling of GMOs-has for the past two-and-a-half years dominated the public discourse around food policy and labeling.
In 2007, on the campaign trail in Iowa, then-Senator Barack Obama told supporters, "We'll let folks know if their food has been genetically modified, because Americans should know what they're buying."
He has not honored that campaign promise.
In 2012, during the high-profile California Proposition 37 campaign, a citizens' initiative that would have required mandatory labeling of GMOs in foods, nearly 208,000 people signed our petition to Michelle Obama asking her to remind President Obama of his campaign promise, and to support GMO labeling. Mrs. Obama did not respond.
Proposition 37 was defeated by a mere 1 percent, only after the biotech and food companies spent more than $46 million to defeat it. A similar scenario played out in Washington State in 2013, where I-522, another citizens' ballot initiative, was also defeated by 1 percent. Industry spent a total of $70 million to defeat those two initiatives,

ATF Storms a Gun Store to Seize Customer List Despite a Judge's Restraining Order (w/ Video)

Federal agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms stormed four Ares Armor stores in San Diego county over the weekend, despite the restraining order the company had obtained from a judge just three days earlier. The ATF carried a warrant, claiming they were looking for questionably legal gun component parts – the polymer 80 percent lower receivers – but they also took customer data and files.

CIA Spies On Congress, Blocks Release of Report About Torture For Over A Year

The big headline across the country: members of the Senate Intelligence Committee accuse the CIA of undermining the Constitution and spying on them. Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Sen. Dianne Feinstein says the CIA hacked into a computer system designed for Congress in order to monitor an investigation into torture and CIA secret overseas prisons.
"The CIA's search may well have violated the separation of powers principles embodied in the United States Constitution,"Feinstein said. "It may have undermined the constitutional framework essential to effective congressional oversight of intelligence activities."
--Sen. Feinstein is...correct that the CIA must be subject to oversight by Congress and is not above the law. But neither is any other government agency including the NSA which has been spying on every American. Simply because those Americans are not members of Congress does not mean that they are not entitled to privacy. Rightfully, Feinstein has been called out for her hypocrisy by Edward Snowden who points out in a statement to NBC News,
"It's clear the CIA was trying to play 'keep away' with documents relevant to an investigation by their overseers in Congress, and that's a serious constitutional concern, but it's equally if not more concerning that we're seeing another 'Merkel Effect,' where an elected official does not care at all that the rights of millions of ordinary citizens are violated by our spies, but suddenly it's a scandal when a politician finds out the same thing happens to them."

A Connecticut man revealed shocking comments made by a Branford police officer this week who has openly defended door-to-door gun confiscation.
After the tragic Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, Conn. lawmakers mandated that all "assault rifles" and "high capacity" magazines be banned, requiring all in circulation to be registered with the state. Fearing the obvious move towards confiscation, the vast majority of gun owners have refused to submit, with estimates finding less than 13 percent of rifles being registered.
