Lawrence Reed on the Progress and Role of FEE
Source: TheDailyBell.com
--We explain to students that a free society requires (and rewards) things like honesty, patience, responsibility, intellectual humility, courage, self-discipline, optimism and wholesome life choices. No other free market think tank stresses this like we do and the message is resonating powerfully.

I think the character angle shows great promise for attracting people of all political leanings to the libertarian message. We can't just make the case for capitalism based on the fact, as indisputable as it is, that capitalism produces more stuff. Even if you convince someone of that, they are vulnerable to the first charlatan who comes along and says it's not fair, that if we only empower politicians and bureaucracies we can improve things. The case for liberty must ultimately rest upon a deep and abiding moral dimension. It's right because it's what humans were made for. We're not a fleet of homogenous robots that function best when somebody programs us. We're at our best when we're free to be ourselves, to be responsible for our decisions and actions without the power to impose our mistakes at gunpoint on our fellow citizens. The liberty/character combination is a strikingly appealing and powerful message that has been underutilized for too long.

FDA Reverses Its Position on Daily Aspirin
Source: Mercola.com
[The FDA's] announcement was prompted by Bayer's request to change its aspirin label to indicate it can help prevent heart attacks in healthy individuals. Aspirin generated $1.27 billion in sales for Bayer last year,3 and from Bayer's request, it appears they want everyone to be taking their drug.

But the FDA says "not so fast"—and rightly so. Evidence in support of using aspirin preventatively has gone from weak to weaker to nonexistent. This is why I've been advising against it for more than a decade. It looks as though aspirin, even "low-dose aspirin" (LDA), may do far more harm than good.

In fact, it is debatable whether or not aspirin has ANY protective benefits against cardiovascular disease, even if you have suffered a heart attack or stroke. Recent scientific studies have uncovered a number of serious side effects, suggesting that whatever aspirin may offer may be overshadowed by its risks, especially when safer natural alternatives exist.

Forensic errors by FBI lab unit spanned two decades
Source: Washington Post
--This month, the inspector general reported that inattention and foot-dragging by the Justice Department and the FBI led them to ignore warnings 15 years ago that scientifically unsupported and misleading testimony could have come from more than a single hair examiner among agents discredited in a 1997 inspector general's report on misconduct at the FBI lab.

The report said that as of 1999, Justice Department officials had enough information to review all hair unit cases — not just those of former agent Michael P. Malone, who was identified as the agent making the most frequent exaggerated testimony.

By 2002, Maureen Killion, then director of enforcement operations, had alerted senior criminal division officials to "the specter that the other examiners in the unit" were as sloppy as Malone, the inspector general said.

"This issue has been raised with the FBI but not resolved to date," Killion wrote to then-Assistant Attorney General Michael Chertoff and his principal deputy, John C. Keeney, in July 2002, the report said.
