When and how did the "secret government" arise in the US? It could easily be traced to the creation of the CIA after World War II.

COMMENT: Well, it can actually be traced back farther than that...
The CIA was created by the CFR (with a great deal of help from none other than Allen Dulles).
What was the stated purpose of the CFR? Answer: To help its progenitors gain control via "secret political and economic influence" and secret control of "journalistic, educational, and propaganda agencies." So, is it any surprise that the CIA (an instrument of the CFR), was created to assist in that goal?

--Among the executives who lent their cooperation to [the CIA] were Williarn Paley of [CBS], Henry Luce of [Time] Inc., Arthur Hays Sulzberger of the New York Times, Barry Bingham Sr. of the LouisviIle Courier Journal, and James Copley of the Copley News Service.
Other organizations which cooperated with the CIA include [ABC], [NBC], the Associated Press, United Press International, Reuters, Hearst Newspapers, Scripps Howard, Newsweek magazine, the Mutual Broadcasting System, the Miami Herald and the old Saturday Evening Post and New York Herald Tribune.
By far the most valuable of these associations, according to CIA officials, have been with the New York Times, CBS and Time Inc.
The CIA's use of the American news media has been much more extensive than Agency officials have acknowledged publicly or in closed sessions with members of Congress. The general outlines of what happened are indisputable; the specifics are harder to come by.
--During the 1976 investigation of the CIA by the Senate Intelligence Committee, chaired by Senator Frank Church, the dimensions of the Agency's involvement with the press became apparent to several members of the panel, as well as to two or three investigators on the staff. But top officials of the CIA, including former directors William Colby and George Bush, persuaded the committee to restrict its inquiry into the matter and to deliberately misrepresent the actual scope of the activities in its final report.
--The CIA also refused the staffs requests for more information on the use of academics. Bush began to urge members of the committee to curtail its inquiries in both areas and conceal its findings in the final report.
"He kept saying, 'Don't fuck these guys in the press and on the campuses,' pleading that they were the only areas of public life with any credibility left," reported a Senate source. Colby, Elder and Rogovin also implored individual members of the committee to keep secret what the staff had found. "There were a lot of representations that if this stuff got out some of the biggest names in journalism would get smeared," said another source. Exposure of the CIA's relationships with journalists and academics, the Agency feared, would close down two of the few avenues of agent recruitment still open.

It's a very long article (25,000 words), but it covers quite a bit of information regarding the CIA's relationship with the media...a relationship that is completely unknown to most Americans.

Detroit Public Schools: 93% Not Proficient in Reading; 96% Not Proficient in Math

(CNSNews.com) - In the Detroit public school district, 96 percent of eighth graders are not proficient in mathematics and 93 percent are not proficient in reading.
That is according to the results of the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress tests published by the Department of Education's National Center for Educational Statistics.
Only 4 percent of Detroit public school eighth graders are proficient or better in math and only 7 percent in reading. This is despite the fact that in the 2011-2012 school year—the latest for which the Department of Education has reported the financial data—the Detroit public schools had "total expenditures" of $18,361 per student and "current expenditures" of $13,330 per student.

COMMENT: No business could survive by providing such a dismal level of "service" for so much money. Something this absurd can only exist through the magic of government; where "customers" are forced to pay, and then have no choice but accept what they're given.
Seriously, how much worse could it be? Assume the Detroit Public School system disappeared tomorrow and there was no "government" solution to replace it...what would emerge?
Could the new education system(s) possibly produce LESS THAN 8 out of 100 children who were proficient in reading and math?
And even if the brand new system(s) did somehow manage to do worse (let's say, initially, only 5 kids out of 100 became proficient) would anyone in their right mind propose resurrecting the old system? Would anyone say: "You know, if we just confiscate a few hundred million per year, we can get an extra 2 or 3 kids per 100 up to par."

--This technology wasn't created as a way to make things a little faster, though certainly that's one of its benefits. The real purpose, the purpose which in hindsight will be hailed as the real innovation, is to remove censorship and central-control from money itself.
Is the internet remembered as the means by which Time Warner more quickly delivered its content to readers? Is the printing press remembered as the means by which the Church more aptly conveyed its prognostications to the devout?
It was the openness of these technologies – the fact that anyone, in any country, could access them, build with them, & experiment with them. One did not have to be 18 to sign up. One did not have to be on a government-approved list. One could write whatever she wished, communicate with whomever she felt relevant.
